Overview Of Procedure

Blood vessels on the face contribute to a ruddy, sunburned appearance, and can be attributed to genetics along with sun exposure. Certain medical conditions also contribute, such as rosacea. Fair-skinned individuals are most susceptible.

We have a great deal of experience in treating broken blood vessels on the face. The specialists at Dermatology Consultants have used many treatment modalities over the years, primarily because technology changes faster than the weather (which says a lot for the Dallas area). Traditionally, lasers have been used to eradicate these unsightly vessels, but in recent years there has been a shift toward intense pulsed light devices (IPL).

We are proud to be able to offer the “Cadillac” of these devices – the StarLux 500. This is a very intricately put-together IPL device that uses patented selected photothermolysis, which targets vascular, as well as pigmented lesions on the face. These treatments are done with no down time, and very few risks and side effects. In many cases, a less ruddy appearance can be achieved in as few as two to three treatments, but sometimes can take up to five. We offer significant discounts with multiple-treatment packages.

Facial Veins FAQ (Frequently Asked Questions)

Can anything be done to get rid of facial veins?

Yes. We have treatments available which improve the appearance of facial veins. Unfortunately, there are no creams that can get rid of facial veins. However, use of a daily sunscreen may prevent their formation.

How does the treatment work?

We use laser- or light-based systems to produce energy in the form of heat.  This heat is is absorbed by the red blood cell, and causes destruction of the vessel wall.

How many treatments does it take?

The number of treatments depends on the severity of the facial veins but generally one treatment will give substantial improvement. Second and third treatments are often necessary for maximum improvement, usually separated by 3 to 4 weeks.

Does the laser hurt?

Most patients describe the sensation as a rubber band snapping against the skin, or a stinging sensation. It is very tolerable, however.

What will I look like after the laser treatment?

Usually only some redness remains after a treatment; however, sometimes there is a little swelling with some crusting or scab formation that may occur and these are usually healed within a week. Most patients who have this procedure performed do not need to take off time from their work schedule.

Are there any side effects to the treatment?

After the treated areas have healed, there is a low incidence of hyperpigmentation or brownish discoloration that can occur at the laser sites. This will usually fade with time or can be treated with bleaching creams or gels.

Are there any other ways to treat facial veins?

The most effective and efficient way to treat facial veins is to use either a laser-based or light-based system.
