Melanoma Monday-SPOT Orange

Wednesday, April 24, 2013

Help us bring awareness to the SPOT Orange Cancer Program
by wearing orange on Monday May 6th.

SPOT Orange Skin Cancer Program

SPOT is a program that aims to teach people about skin cancer.  The American Academy of Dermatology has launched an initiative to lower the mortality rate from skin cancer in the next 30 years. Skin cancer detection starts with you. Physicians recommend doing self-examinations for signs of skin cancer. If you notice any spots, you need to see a dermatologist immediately. It is important to make life changes that will prevent skin cancer. Melanoma is expected to kill an estimated 9,480 people in the United States this year. Approximately one person in the United States dies of melanoma every hour.

Spotting skin cancer at its early stages can save your life. The survival rate over the past five years for people who were diagnosed with melanoma before its spreads is 98%.

Skin Care Prevention

When spending time in the sun, it is essential to take the appropriate steps to prevent skin cancer. Sun exposure can lead to melanoma 1and 2. Sun is actually good for your health, but you must protect your skin.Doctors recommend that you seek shade when it is the strongest. The sun is the most powerful between 10 AM and 2PM.  To reduce your risk of skin cancer, you should wear clothing that protects your skin such has sunglasses, a hat, and pants.

You should apply a water-resistant sunscreen with an SPF of 30 or more when you are outside. Clinical research has shown that broad-spectrum sunscreen protects against ultraviolet B rays and ultraviolet A rays. You muse reapply sunscreen every few hours and after you have been in the water or were sweating.

One place where you need to be extra cautious is near snow, water, and sand. They reflect, which causes sun rays to cause more damage to your skin.

It is highly recommended that you don’t use tanning beds. The use of tanning beds can lead to skin cancer. An alternative to tanning is to use a spray to make your skin look tan. This option will reduce your risks of getting skin cancer.

Detection

It is up to you to prevent skin cancer through self-examinations. You should conduct a self-examination for signs of skin cancer every month and contact a dermatologist if you see any signs of cancer. This will help to ensure that skin cancer is spotted early and can be treated.Step by Step Self Examination for Signs of Melanoma

You will need a mirror, a stool, a light, a hand mirror, and a blow dryer.

Step 1: Start by examining your lips, nose, and ears. The mirrors will help you get a better look.
Step 2: Next use the blow dryer to look at your scalp. You should ask a family member or friend to help.
Step 3: Look at your hands and palms. It is important to look between your fingers and under your fingernails. Also check the front and back of your forearms
Step 4: Then stand before a full sized mirror and scan your entire body. Make sure you check your underarms.
Step 5: You then want to look at your neck, torso, and chest. Females should examine the underside of their breast.
Step 6: Then turn you back to the full-length mirror. You will use the hand mirror to inspect your neck and shoulders and any part of your upper arms that you could not see when performing step 4.
Step 7: Use both mirrors to look at your buttocks and lower back.
Step 8: Sit down and prop up one leg at a time. You will use the hand mirror to check your genitals. Then you will check your ankles, sides of your legs, and toes and under toenails. Don’t forget to examine the soles of your feet.

The Proper Way to Wash Your Face

Wednesday, March 20, 2013

Washing your face is easy. All you do is soap up a washcloth and scrub until your face is clean. Although you may have been shown this technique when you were young, washing your face so harshly can really affect your appearance in a bad way.

Board-certified dermatologists advise that people need to treat their faces gently. You should never scrub your face. They recommend mild cleansing products as opposed to harsh agents. Scrubbing your face or using strong chemicals irritates your skin, which makes it look worse than if it were cleansed more carefully.Dermatologists recommend the following tips for healthy-looking skin.

  1. Use a mild cleanser with no abrasives or alcohol.
  2. After wetting your face with lukewarm water, apply the cleanser gently to your face with your fingertips. Be careful not to scrub your face.
  3. Rinse your face thoroughly with lukewarm water. Use a soft towel to pat your face dry.
  4. If you have dry or itchy skin, apply moisturizer. Be especially careful when applying moisturizer near your eyes because this skin is delicate and can be damaged easily.
  5. Wash your face twice a day, in the morning and at night. You should also wash it after sweating profusely. Don’t forget to wash as soon as you can if you sweat a lot while wearing a hat.

If you have any specific questions, give us a call. We will answer any questions you have regarding how to care for your skin, hair and nails.

You can view the short film below that outlines the proper way to wash your face. The video was made as part of National Healthy Skin Month, which is in November. You can see this and other videos on the American Academy of Dermatology’s website. It is one of many videos in the Dermatology A to Z: Video Series, which show how to properly care for skin, hair and nails. A new video is posted every month.

A Dermatology Practice’s Perspective on miraDry

Wednesday, November 14, 2012
A young woman in the dance troupe can’t focus on choreography because she’s worrying about her sweaty underarms. A pastor giving a Sunday sermon drenches his shirt and sport coat. A physician’s assistant gets yellow armpit stains on her white lab coat and has to replace it – 15 times!

Aside from their experiences with uncomfortable, annoying sweat, each of these people has something else in common, too – they are now free from embarrassing underarm perspiration thanks to miraDry

After treating numerous patients with miraDry, “We haven’t had anybody not satisfied,” says Dr. Nicole Hartsough of Hartsough Dermatology in Loves Park, Ill. In fact, many patients have driven two-and-a-half hours to receive the miraDry treatment at Hartsough’s clinic. “They come to us having done their research and ready to get started."

“For people with excessive underarm sweating [hyperhidrosis],” Zimmerman adds, “especially people who want and need to get up confidently in front of others, this problem affects them everyday. Sweat is commonly seen as a weakness. If you sweat a lot, you may come off as not knowing what you are doing or being insecure. You can’t let your true personality come out.”

The miraDry procedure uses targeted, noninvasive electromagnetic energy to safely eliminate underarm sweat glands and clinical studies show an 82% average reduction in sweating. Speak to a miraDry specialists with Dallas Derm

MiraDry for excessive sweating

Tuesday, March 06, 2012

Channel 8 News | Spotlights Mr. Maris

It always happens at the worst time. You get nervous or stressed and start sweating too much. Now the FDA has cleared a new non-surgical procedure to help address bothersome sweat outbreaks.

Mild Chemical Peels

Thursday, January 19, 2012

Since our current special is $15 Mild Chemical Peels, we thought you might like to know how you might benefit from this treatment. Read on to find out more about the peels we use; if you have other questions about anti-aging for your skin, we would love to answer them while your skin is being “refreshed.”

Although one Chemical Peel brings some improvement (mainly leaving the skin softer and more refreshed), several treatments are needed to see maximum results when treating any condition. Many different chemical peels exist; therefore the condition treated determines which peel is used.

Acne (including blackheads and whiteheads)

One of the best chemical agents used to treat acne is salicylic acid (SA).  SA dissolves dead skin cells and oil plugs that get stuck in the pores, which over time prevents acne and evens out post-inflammatory pigmentation.  SA can have more noticeable after-effects; therefore this is not always used in the treatment of acne.  On the day of treatment the skin is slightly red; and three to four days later might show mild to moderate flaking, especially around the mouth.

Glycolic acid (GA) is also very effective in the treatment of acne.  Because GA is made up of much smaller molecules, it is less irritating to the skin.  It dissolves the dead skin and oil that get stuck in the pores, much like SA, and also leaves the skin a little pink.  The post-peel flaking is a usually a little less noticeable with GA.

Lactic Acid is a milder, more moisture-preserving agent, and also serves to dissolve the dead skin and mild clogging in the pores.  This is a wonderful choice for those who suffer from dry skin associated with eczema.  Because it is a milder agent, the post-peel effects on the skin are typically mild, with some slight pinkness and only mild sloughing (sometimes not even noticeable to the naked eye).

It is worth mentioning that there is no treatment highly effective for reducing pore size; however, if the pore is enlarged due to the presence of oil (sebum) and dead skin cells, any treatment that is effective in unclogging pores will help reduce the size of them.

Actinic (Sun) Damage

Sun damage includes pigment changes, splotchy or crepe paper-like skin, and mild to moderate wrinkling. GA and Lactic Acid (mentioned above) are both used from time to time for correction of this.  Another agent used for Actinic Damage is a modified Jessner’s solution (salicylic acid, lactic acid, and resorcinol).  This is best used on light to medium colored skin.  Post-treatment redness and flaking can be slightly greater when using this agent.

Trichloracetic Acid (TCA) is occasionally used for the treatment of sun damage, but is much stronger; therefore, post-treatment skin can be much redder, and true peeling, rather than mild flaking, can occur.  The use of this agent depends largely on the patient’s overall goals, schedule, skin type, etc.

Dr. Euwer - Sculptra®aesthetic Training

Friday, November 11, 2011

Dr. Euwer has been busy lately training other physicians to inject Sculptra®aesthetic, the anti-age injectable for the modern age. In October, she trained a physician in Plano and was an instructor at the workshop in Dallas put on by The American Academy of Cosmetic Dermatology and Dermatologic Surgery. During the workshop she demonstrated the latest techniques for injecting sculptra®aesthetic.

Yesterday, Dermatology Consultants hosted Dr. Danny Vleggar, an internationally known expert from Europe. We had Dermatologists and Plastic Surgeons from the metroplex at our office to watch Dr. Vleggar as he demonstrated and talked about his techniques for injecting sculptra®aesthetic.  Check out the video of this training session.

Ear Lobe Repair

Friday, October 14, 2011

Do you have some nice earrings that you would like to wear during the holidays but find that you can not because the hole in your ear lobe is too large?  Schedule to have that enlarged hole repaired now and you can be wearing those earrings this holiday season!

Many patients with pierced ears complain about the holes becoming too large.  These enlarged holes may be from the ear ring getting pulled or from wearing heavy ear rings that enlarge the hole.  Recently we have seen some patients who had gauges in their ears to create large holes but now find they no longer want the large holes.  The large holes are easily repaired in our office under a local anaesthetic.  The skin around the hole is excised (cut out) using delicate instruments and then the hole is sewed using very fine suture material.  The stitches stay in for one week.  The ear can be re-pierced in two to three months after the procedure.  Look at our before and after pictures under gallery in our web site.  This is a simple, painless procedure that is very affordable.  Call our office for more information at 972-243-4530. We would love to help you.
